Yin Yoga is a quiet practice that targets the fascia -- the body's network of connective tissue -- in a specific way. Fascia surrounds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle, connecting all parts of the body to create our whole being.
Healthy fascia glides; fascia that is over-stressed becomes sticky and tight, resulting in stiffness and even pain. Limited physical activity, repetitive motion, and trauma such as surgery or injury all create an environment for unhealthy fascia.
Yin yoga helps maintain healthy, hydrated fascia. It also helps move energy through the body, and provide space for meditation.Â
All are welcome in a Yin Yoga practice. Practitioners take a shape on the floor, support the body with props, relax the muscles, and remain relatively still in each pose for about five minutes. Yin Yoga is similar to Restorative Yoga in that it does not involve muscular effort; but it is different in that it does seek moderate physical sensation.
